Humantay Lagoon
Overview
Laguna Humantay derives its name from the neighboring mountain, Humantay (17,956 ft), and is renowned as one of the most exquisite and sacred lagoons in Cusco. Its turquoise waters, adorned by the snow-capped peak of Salkantay (20,570 ft), beckon and reveal the essence of its popularity.
The origins of this lagoon are intricately tied to the legend of the Ausangate and Salcantay brothers. As the tale goes, they embarked on separate journeys to unknown lands in a quest to end a severe drought. Ausangate headed south and discovered sustenance, which he sent back to Cusco. On the other hand, Salcantay ventured north and, like his brother, found provisions, but also something more precious: love.
However, the love story between Salcantay and the goddess Véronica did not culminate in happiness, as the Apu had to return to Cusco to ensure its inhabitants had access to water. The two brothers transformed into snow-capped mountains, continuing to supply the Imperial City with water to this day. Yet, Salcantay’s sorrow was so profound that it gave birth to the Humantay lagoon, formed by his tears. It is believed that the captivating colors of the lagoon reflect the authenticity of his emotions.
Laguna Humantay presents travelers with a majestic natural landscape nestled at the base of glaciers. The journey to this destination is truly worthwhile, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in its awe-inspiring beauty. If you dare, you can even take a dip in the icy waters of the lagoon, a testament to the indomitable spirit of adventure and the desire to connect with nature’s wonders.
