Machupicchu
Overview
Machu Picchu was and remains a sanctuary of Andean religion, perhaps the most significant during the reign of the Inca Empire. Similar to the sacred capital of Cusco, it possesses an architectural design and layout that are inherently sacred, dedicated to worship and religious practices. Nestled in a breathtaking and awe-inspiring landscape, it is surrounded by lush flora, typical of mountainous or jungle regions, boasting an unparalleled diversity of orchids.
Machu Picchu is renowned as a masterpiece of Inca architecture and engineering, characterized by its unique blend of architectural and natural features. The air of mystery that has shrouded the site in much of the literature published about it has elevated its status as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations worldwide.
The city is situated atop a rocky mountain range, referred to as the Vilcabamba batholith, a granite outcrop named by geologist Isaiah Bowman in 1911.
However, it is important to note that in recent years, there has been an increasing debate and discussion regarding the management and preservation of Machu Picchu, as the overwhelming influx of visitors poses challenges for its long-term conservation.
